SPECS GmbH was founded in 1983, when a group of young engineers and scientists got together to develop and produce innovative technology for computer software and hardware. At the end of the 1980's SPECS started first projects in the growing market of surface science technology. By taking over the surface analysis operations of Leybold AG in Cologne - a market leader in the area of surface analysis - in 1992, development and production of surface analysis equipment and systems became the main issue in the company. One further milestone was the acquisition of key products and staff from VSI GmbH - a world wide supplier of surface analysis equipment and systems - in 1998.
